There are many dimensions to insecurity. It is thus erroneous when insecurity issues happen and some persons think it all starts and ends at the scene. The Director-General of Nigeria Maritime Security Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh indicated that there is a land-and-sea dimension to insecurity in Lagos and elsewhere. He made this assertion at the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) Annual Town Hall Meeting, National Association of Online Security News Publishers, NAOSNP can report.

In his brief message at the 2022 Town Hall Meeting, the 16th of its kind by LSSTF, Dr. Jamoh noted: ‘Our own area is maritime security. I believe that the issue of insecurity whether on land or maritime is almost the same. It starts on land and ends on sea. The proceeds come from the sea and end on land.’

Praising Lagos for the inclusive efforts on security, the NIMASA boss added: ‘You can’t claim to have freedom if you don’t have security. Lagos State as far as maritime security is concerned is one of the foremost states. We are celebrating Nigeria as one of the best managed maritime security in the globe today whereas we were tagged as the most dangerous before.’

NAOSNP gathered that there are plans by NIMASA to establish a vocational centre to support Lagos’ efforts. Bashir Jamoh stated: ‘We declare that the lasting solution to insecurity is education and employment. That is why we are establishing a school in UNILAG. We are also asking that Lagos will give us land so we can build a skill acquisition centre. I promise that depending on the area, we will build it within 90 days.’

Responding to NIMASA during his speech, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu said: ‘It is only when land is safe that the sea is safe. We say thank you for the donation of the vocational training centre. We want a lot more from you.’
