New FCID AIG Simeon Akpanudom vows to end human rights abuses

The newly promoted Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, Lagos, Mr Simeon Akpanudom, has pledged to eliminate human rights abuses in police investigations, setting a reform-driven tone at the start of his tenure.

Akpanudom, who assumed office as the 56th AIG, made the pledge during
his inaugural speech at the FCID headquarters on Monday.

Akpanudom described his appointment as a significant responsibility and a call to serve with integrity, professionalism, and accountability.

The AIG emphasised that the FCID, as the apex investigative arm of the Nigeria Police Force, handled complex and sensitive criminal cases with both national and international dimensions.

He said that such responsibilities required strict adherence to the rule of law and respect for fundamental human rights.

“I see my posting as a call for the highest level of professionalism, transparency, accountability, and responsibility to ensure human rights are respected and the rule of law is upheld,” he said.

Akpanudom underscored the importance of rebuilding public trust in the police, noting that effective law enforcement depends on the confidence of the people.

He aligned his vision with the I-G’s philosophy of people-centered policing, which prioritises respect, fairness, and community engagement.

Akpanudom announced plans to enhance the investigative capacity of FCID personnel through intensive training, adoption of modern technology, and strategic partnerships with ministries, departments, agencies, and the private sector.

He disclosed that the initiatives would be implemented within 30 to 60 days of assuming office.

The FCID boss explained that improving investigative processes would not only boost efficiency but also reduce incidents of rights violations, prevent costly litigations, and enhance the credibility of the police force.

The AIG issued a clear warning against misconduct, stating that disciplinary breaches would be dealt with in accordance with extant laws, including the Police Act, Force Orders, and Public Service Rules.

At the same time, he promised that officers who demonstrate professionalism and exemplary conduct would be recognised and rewarded.

Akpanudom also assured members of the public of his accessibility and willingness to engage, urging patience as he works to address concerns and implement reforms within the department.

He further called on the media to play a constructive role by disseminating accurate information about police activities, stressing that responsible reporting was essential to building trust and enhancing national security.

The police boss expressed deep appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, for finding him worthy of the position, noting that the office he now occupied carried immense expectations

The AIG expressed gratitude to his family, colleagues, and supporters for their encouragement and prayers, pledging to justify the confidence reposed in him.

“Together, through robust partnership, we will build trust and enhance national security, starting from our immediate communities,” he said.
