Appointment of IGP, Perogative of President – PSC
By Trek Africa Newspaper

The Police Service Commission (PSC) says the appointment of Inspector General of Police (I-G) is the prerogative of the President with the endorsement of the Police Council.
Mr Ikechukwu Ani, the Head of Press and Public Relations of PSC said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.
He claimed that the clarification came in response to a newspaper article titled “Uneasy calm in Police over Successor to IGP Baba” in which the PSC Chairman, Dr. Solomon Arase, was cited as having granted an interview. According to Daily trust.
Arase allegedly stated similar opinions on the subject even when he was not contacted at all, according to Ani, who said that the reporter who purportedly spoke with other Civil Society Chieftains for the story went farther.
According to the report, the PSC Chairman agrees that any potential waiver by the President to extend the tenure of the I-G would be a complete violation of the law.
According to the report, the chairman of the PSC agreed that any such move could cause unwarranted strain inside the system, particularly the Command structure of the Police hierarchy.
He claimed the allegation was false and inaccurate, adding that the PSC chairman had neither granted the reporter an interview nor instructed anyone to speak on his behalf.
“Arase is a member of the Police Council and a former I-G. He is currently the chairman of the PSC.
As it relates to his advice or involvement in the appointment of an I-G, he is aware of the channels of communication.
“He has never been in doubt because he has always said that it is the prerogative of Mr. President to appoint an I-G with the endorsement of the Police Council, chaired by the President,” he said. According to Daily trust.
He claims that the Commission wants an apology and a retraction for the offensive publication.
