WOEFULLY, WOEFULLY, APC COUNCIL BOSSES FAIL TEST OF POPULARITY; RESCUED AGAIN BY ASIWAJU BOLA TINUBU
By ‘Yomi Oyelami, Trek Africa Newspaper
L-R: National Leader, All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Caretaker Chairman, APC Lagos State, Alhaji Babatunde Balogun and APC LOGO.
It is disheartening, disappointing, and all shades of appaling for
All Progressives Congress (APC) council bosses in Lagos who having enjoyed four solid years of administration to still need the intervention of the Jagaban of Africa, Bola Ahmed Tinubu to get a nod for their second term. Even if you are the most unpopular person in your community, four years at the helms is fair enough to warm yourself into the hearts of the citizenry in your communities and party faithfuls. If you cannot win a vote of popularity after three to four years, you ought to be worried about your performance.
The commercial nerve centre of Nigeria, Lagos was treated to uneasy calm on Saturday, 29th of May, 2021 when the All Progressives Congress (APC) conducted chairmanship and councillorship primaries ahead of the upcoming July LG/LCDA polls in Lagos. In Surulere, some persons paid the ultimate sacrifice. What lies ahead for the family and friends of those ones?
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu
The friction and tension which followed within the party is unimaginable. Again, the national leader of All Progressives Congress(APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu needed to step in to avoid further disarray. Assuredly, he wouldn’t watch what he and his cohort toiled to build for 22 years crumble.
Governor, Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu
It is apparent that the party, APC, is becoming more favorably disposed to direct, open-ballot elections over indirect style since the 2018 gubernatorial primaries which produced Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu (now Governor) as flagbearer of the party. When the same style of elections was conducted now, many of our LG/LCDA chairmen fell like a pack of cards.
It is obvious that many of our leaders do not consider that their public service will be reviewed. Were it a private organization, your performance evaluation after three years is a strong indication of your personal effectiveness and professional dexterity. This lackadaisical attitude to governance is a dent on public leadership in Nigeria.
How do you tell party faithfuls who trooped out in their numbers on 29th May to vote their preferred candidate in an open election that he/she had to be begged to allow someone else. They will be disheartened, disappointed, and appalled. This is what leads to political apathy. This is what kills democracy.
Thanks to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for putting his immense goodwill on the line to save the party. If he is not a hugely respected leader, it would be hard to convince many contestants of the recent elections and their admirers which clearly doesn’t mean well for the party’s internal stability.
Well, the deed has been done. A Yoruba adage says ‘a maa n ba eniyan wa ise ni, a kii ba se; you can help someone get a job, you can’t help him do the job’. I hope that our LG/LCDA bosses will do better on this second term if they win the upcoming LG/LCDA general elections.
