THE ROLE OF POLICE ON DRUG PREVENTION – IGHODALO

All is set for the kick off training for Nigeria Police Force on Drug prevention after it was suspended in February due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

According to the organizer, President, The Drug Salvation Foundation and National Coordinator, Drug Prevention, Treatment and Care (DPTC) Sensitisation Training for Nigeria Police Force, Mr. Wilson Ighodalo stated,  “At present, the COVID-19 Pandemic how it is being addressed has been a ‘Wake-up-Call’ to Nigeria Public healthcare that prevention is the single most important goal and that is the harm reduction only approach. Drug abuse prevention protect the health, safety and quality of life for all, especially young people. Public healthcare promotes and protect the health of people and communities where they live, learn, work, and play”.

Wilson pointed, “The aim of this training is to increase understanding of the role of police in the prevention and management of drugs-related problems”,

The training modules is delivered over 3 days for selected senior key Nigeria Police officers. Within this period knowledge is imparted, using adult learning principles by mixing theoretical, practical, discussion, debates, group activities/presentation,
film screenings to challenge/ enhance engagement and interest among participants, and daily/final evaluation. Training of Police Officers on UNODC Toolkit for Law Enforcement Officials on response to drugs.

Substance abuse require a coordinated national response. TDSF and UNODC promotes and facilitate the training for law enforcement and delivers new approach to strengthen their capacities.

Sensitisation training tailored towards police officers involved in the development and implementation of drug prevention activities.

Our aim was to provide insights and evidence based approach on the experiences made with different concepts and strategies of involving police in drug prevention, and to offer a training of open discussion on the feasibility of new approaches for the future.

Their positive feedback and lively discussions highlighted the existing gaps practical training for law enforcement officials on drug policy issues.

These are innovative concept developed in response to the call by people to create a more holistic approach to understanding and shaping drug policy.
