During his speech, Mahama also called for greater acknowledgement of the history and lasting impact of the transatlantic slave trade.
He said enslaved Africans were hunted, captured, trafficked, bought, sold and exploited for profit, with the trade contributing to the development of modern economies while leaving Africa to contend with depopulation, disruption and generational trauma.
“Truth requires acknowledgement. And acknowledgement must lead to meaningful repair,” Mahama said.
