OVER 150,000 PATIENTS GET FREE MEDICAL CHECKUP IN KEBBI STATE

Over 300 health workers are bringing succor to an estimated 150,000 persons free of charge at the 5th medical outreach organized by the Kebbi State Government under the leadership of Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu. It started on Monday, 29th of October 2018.

A summary of the last (4th) outreach shows that 385 health professionals saw an unprecedented 105,000 patients with 876 surgeries, including 300 cataract surgeries.

Alongside Medicaid cancer foundation in the current 3 week long outreach are health personnel from Moses Lake, U.S.A, Usman Dan Fodio Teaching Hospital, University College Hospital Ibadan as well as indigenous Kebbi State doctors, nurses, laboratory and radiology technicians.

The wife of the governor, CEO Medicaid Cancer Foundation and Consultant Peadiatrician, Dr Zainab Bagudu went round the departments and joined to consult with paediatric patients. At the end of the day, Her Excellency lamented the high number of malnourished children and immediately chaired an emergency meeting to examine how best to tackle the problem. Despite huge investments, Kebbi State continues to have one of the highest malnutrition rate in Nigeria.

After extensive deliberations between the local team and paediatric nutrition experts from Chile and UCH, a resolution was made to
1- Re-examine and institutionalize the Infant and Young Child Feeding Program
2- Advocate for inclusion of Nutrition education in grassroots communities and schools
3- Develop and distribute a therapeutic feed with locally available foods based on the success recorded in the UCH Ibadan and South West Nigeria.

Experts from Chile include Dr Karin Shilling, Dr Jose Astudillo and Dr Paula Carvajal. From UCH was Snr Paediatric Nurse Ronke Bello. Drs Bagudu, CMD of KMC Dr Bature Koko and Dr Lawan Kangiwa represented the state.

Other aspects of the free outreach include general examination, cancer screening, eye, dental and other surgery.
