Nigeria Customs Service Board Confirms Appointment of Top Officials, Promotes 4,291 Senior Officers

The Nigeria Customs Service Board (NCSB), at its 61st regular meeting held on December 18, 2024, under the chairmanship of the Honorable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, approved the appointment of one Deputy Comptroller General (DCG) and seven Assistant Comptrollers General (ACGs). The Board also promoted 4,291 senior officers, marking a significant milestone for the Service.
Appointments to Management Positions
The newly confirmed members of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Management Team include DCG S. Chiroma (North-East) and ACGs Z.M. Gaji (North-East), O.A. Adebakin (South-West), G.M. Omale (North-Central), M.S. Yusuf (North-Central), D.A. Nnadi (South-East), H.K. Ejibunu (North-Central), and D. Hassan (North-East).
These appointments address vacancies created by the retirement of former management members and reflect the Service’s dedication to national inclusivity, institutional balance, and adherence to the Federal Character Policy as enshrined in Section 14(4) of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.
Promotion of 4,291 Senior Officers
The Board approved the promotion of 4,291 senior officers, recognizing their outstanding performance during the 2024 promotion exercise. A detailed breakdown includes:
- 80 Deputy Comptrollers (DC) promoted to Customs Comptroller (CC),
- 151 Assistant Comptrollers (AC) to Deputy Comptroller (DC),
- 612 Chief Superintendents of Customs (CSC) to Assistant Comptroller (AC),
- 641 Superintendents of Customs (SC) to Chief Superintendent of Customs (CSC),
- 392 Deputy Superintendents of Customs (DSC) to Superintendent of Customs (SC),
- 590 Assistant Superintendents of Customs I (ASC I) to DSC,
- 965 ASC II to ASC I,
- 860 Inspectors of Customs (IC) to ASC II.
In addition, 16 officers received special promotions for exceptional performance in their duties, while the late Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Etop Andrew Essien, was honored with a posthumous promotion for his service and dedication.
Restructuring for Efficiency
To enhance operational efficiency, the Board approved the transfer of the Post Clearance Audit (PCA) Unit from the Tariff and Trade Department to the Office of the Comptroller General. This restructuring elevates the PCA Unit to be headed by an Assistant Comptroller General, ensuring improved oversight and streamlined administrative processes.
Extension of Service for Institutional Stability
Amid the retirement of senior officers, the Board approved a 12-month service extension for selected senior officers from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to ensure operational continuity. Beneficiaries include ACGs B. Imam (North-East), I.G. Umar (North-West), and K.C. Egwu (South-East), as well as Comptrollers F. Abdulqadri (North-Central), M.T. Awe (South-West), and O.F. Ojiefor (South-South).

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, congratulated the newly appointed, promoted, and retained officers, urging them to uphold the Service’s core values and pursue excellence. He also extended festive greetings and expressed gratitude to the Honorable Minister of Finance for the timely completion of the 2024 promotion cycle.
