Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, alongside Hajia Nana Shettima, the wife of the Vice President, and wives of several state governors, paid a solidarity visit to Borno State to support victims of the September 10 floods that devastated parts of the region. The visit was part of the First Lady’s efforts under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) to provide assistance to affected communities.
During the visit to Maiduguri, Senator Tinubu praised the ongoing infrastructural developments in Borno State, attributing them to the dedication and leadership of Governor Babagana Zulum. “We are here to support you,” the First Lady said, addressing the governor and the people of the state. “It is really sad, but I pray the land will flourish and prosper again.”
In response to a plea from the Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness Alhaji (Dr) Abubakar Ibn El-Kanemi, for assistance in empowering women affected by the floods, Senator Tinubu announced that the RHI would be providing N250 million to support 5,000 women petty traders in the state.

“After His Royal Majesty’s words, myself and Her Excellency Hajia Shettima discussed it on our way here and agreed that the Initiative will give N50,000 each to 5,000 women petty traders to support their businesses,” she revealed.

The First Lady expressed deep concern over the devastating impact of the floods, which left some residents dead and many homeless, calling on Nigerians to rally support to expedite the recovery of the affected communities.

Governor Zulum, in his remarks, thanked the First Lady and the Renewed Hope Initiative for their continued support since the disaster. “I thank Your Excellency for the initial donation made through the wife of the Vice President. These food items, relief materials, and your visit are further evidence that you are truly a mother to the entire nation,” he said.

Senator Tinubu also took the opportunity to engage directly with flood victims at the Borno State Government House, where she distributed relief materials, including food and sanitary supplies, as part of her ongoing efforts to support the recovery process in the state.
