Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has reinforced her dedication to the fight against Tuberculosis (TB) in the country, emphasizing the importance of tackling both TB and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

Speaking at a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) side event organized by Stop TB Partnership, she highlighted the critical need for a unified approach to end both threats by 2030.

Tinubu expressed concern over the high burden of TB in Nigeria, one of the countries most affected by the disease, resulting in around 125,000 deaths. She noted that TB impacts people across all social and economic groups, with the poor being especially vulnerable.

As a Global and National Stop TB Champion, Tinubu emphasized the importance of joint efforts in addressing TB and AMR, calling on stakeholders to focus on preventing new infections, raising awareness about Drug-Resistant TB, and promoting responsible use of antibiotics. She also urged for prioritization of research into new tools, treatments, and vaccines to combat AMR.

Earlier, Dr. Lucica Ditiu, Executive Director of Stop TB Partnership, encouraged collaboration among countries to leverage each other’s strengths in the global fight against TB.

The event saw the participation of key figures, including the wives of the Kwara and Imo State governors, Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, and ministers from other nations. The session was themed, ‘Breaking the Resistance: Fighting AMR and TB together for a Healthy Future’.
