The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has introduced strict guidelines prohibiting politicians and government officials from speaking on church podiums during services. The Church has also warned against publicly praising such figures, aiming to protect the integrity of Christian worship and curb the use of religious platforms for political messaging.
According to a memo signed by the Most Revd Dr. Henry Ndukuba, Primate of the Church of Nigeria, the directives were announced during the Episcopal Consultation in the Diocese of Nike, Enugu. The Church emphasized its commitment to neutrality and avoiding political partisanship, citing growing concerns about the politicization of religious gatherings.
Key guidelines include:
Banning church leaders from praising or glorifying political figures in ways that could damage the Church’s reputation
Informing politicians and government officials that the Church is not a platform for promoting partisan opinions or political propaganda
Refraining from making statements or behaving in ways that could be construed as politically aligned or sectional
Prohibiting guests from speaking from the lectern, reserved for reading God’s Word
The Church’s decision aims to maintain its core values and divine mission.
