Conrad Utaan, a chairmanship aspirant for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has raised alarm about the party’s ongoing internal strife, warning that the All Progressives Congress (APC) could easily secure victory in the 2027 elections if these issues persist. Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, Utaan emphasized that the internal discord has rendered key figures within the PDP ineffective, undermining the party’s prospects.

The PDP has faced significant internal disputes since the lead-up to the 2023 presidential election, which culminated in the party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, losing to the incumbent President Bola Tinubu of the APC. Utaan attributed part of the ongoing crisis to acting National Chairman Umar Damagum’s inability to revitalize the party following the court’s removal of Senator Iyorchia Ayu.

“The confusion in our party is palpable,” Utaan stated. “If we continue down this path, the APC may effortlessly stroll into another term by 2027. The prominent figures in the PDP have become dormant because of our internal issues. That’s why we advocate for North Central to complete its term as PDP National Chairman to resolve these challenges.”

Utaan clarified that his candidacy is aimed at completing the term for the North Central zone, asserting that even a brief tenure would restore balance to the leadership structure. He emphasized the urgency of proposing a replacement for Damagum at the upcoming National Executive Committee meeting on October 24.

“Damagum was meant to be an interim chairman, but he is becoming more of a substantive chairman without proper communication to the North Central. If the party decides otherwise, they should inform us. The North East cannot hold both the Deputy National Chairman and the National Chairman while we in North Central are left with nothing,” he remarked.

Stressing the need for peace and reconciliation, Utaan expressed his willingness to engage with all stakeholders, including prominent figures like Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara and former President Goodluck Jonathan, to facilitate unity within the party. “I am not too proud to kneel before anyone to achieve peace and move the PDP forward. This party needs a fresh start,” he said.

Utaan believes he possesses the necessary skills and empathy to lead the PDP effectively, stating, “I have what it takes to understand the pulse of the people. Ordinary members of the PDP can connect with me better than any former national secretary or governor. My goal is to lead this party with humility and sacrifice, awakening the North Central and revitalizing the PDP.”
