Tinubu Govt Set to Reduce Electricity Tariffs, Promises Relief for Citizens

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has assured Nigerians that electricity costs may decrease in the coming months.
Trek Africa Newspaper reports that this announcement comes as efforts to improve power generation and distribution continue nationwide.
Despite rising concerns over electricity tariffs, Adelabu noted that electricity remains a more affordable option compared to running generators on petrol or diesel, especially given current fuel prices.
The minister made these comments on Thursday, October 5, during a courtesy visit by Mr. Tosin Adeyanju, Executive Secretary of the National Lottery Trust Fund, who led his team to the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Adelabu also pointed out that Nigeria’s electricity rates are still among the lowest in comparison to neighboring African countries like Togo, Mali, and Niger Republic. However, he acknowledged that low income levels in the country make electricity costs seem higher for many consumers.
Trek Africa Newspaper also reported that many Nigerians have expressed frustration over the recent increase in electricity tariffs, with Band A customers—who receive at least 20 hours of daily supply—now paying N209.5 per kilowatt-hour. This has led to complaints from both citizens and manufacturers.
Despite these concerns, Adelabu reassured the public, saying, “Nigerians can expect a reduction in electricity costs, thanks to ongoing efforts to enhance power generation and distribution.
While electricity remains the cheapest in Nigeria compared to other African nations, the low income levels make it feel expensive to consumers.”
