President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved free nationwide train rides for Nigerians from December 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025, to alleviate transportation costs during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, after the Federal Executive Council meeting held in Abuja.

Trek Africa Newspaperreports that Idris stated, “As we did last year, there will be free train service to all Nigerians from December 20 up until January 5.

This free train service is nationwide and reflects the President’s commitment to easing the burden of transportation, especially for the most vulnerable citizens.”

The minister emphasized that this initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s broader agenda to reduce economic hardship for Nigerians. He noted that similar free train services were implemented during last year’s festive period and for the Sallah celebrations earlier in 2024.

“This decision underscores the administration’s dedication to providing relief during periods of significant movement, ensuring that Nigerians can reunite with their families and celebrate the season without the added strain of transportation costs,” Idris added.

The free train rides are expected to serve thousands of commuters across major railway routes in the country, providing a cost-free alternative for traveling during one of the busiest times of the year.

This initiative forms part of President Tinubu’s efforts to support Nigerians amidst ongoing economic challenges, ensuring that the festive season remains joyous and accessible to all.

Details regarding train schedules and routes are anticipated to be released by the Nigerian Railway Corporation in the coming days.
