Nigeria has overtaken Côte d’Ivoire as the country with the most Confederation of African Football (CAF) Men’s Player of the Year titles, following Ademola Lookman’s triumph at the 2024 CAF Awards.

Trek Africa Newspaper reports that the prestigious event took place on Monday night in Marrakesh, Morocco.

Lookman’s victory marks Nigeria’s seventh CAF Player of the Year win, solidifying its position as Africa’s football powerhouse. The country now holds the record for the most CAF POTY wins, surpassing Côte d’Ivoire’s six.

Nigeria is also the only nation to have achieved back-to-back CAF Player of the Year titles on three occasions, with a different player winning each time.

Côte d’Ivoire, previously tied with Nigeria, boasts six awards, with Yaya Touré claiming four titles and Didier Drogba earning two.

Cameroon follows with five awards, thanks to the legendary Samuel Eto’o, who won the honor four times, and Patrick Mboma, who claimed it once. Senegal has three wins, led by El Hadji Diouf with two titles and Sadio Mané with one.

Others include Ghana’s Abedi Pele, Morocco’s Mustapha Hadji, Mali’s Frederic Kanouté, Liberia’s George Weah, Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez, and Togo’s Emmanuel Adebayor, all of whom have won the award once.

Lookman’s achievement not only elevates Nigerian football but also cements the country’s dominance in African football history.
