In a historic move towards balanced regional development, President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday signed into law two landmark bills: the South-West Development Commission (SWDC) and South-South Development Commission (SSDC).

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the presidential assent during plenary, marking the completion of Nigeria’s geo-political development architecture.

This decisive action means all six of Nigeria’s geo-political zones now possess statutory development agencies, creating a uniform framework for addressing regional infrastructure and economic challenges.

These commissions are designed to drive infrastructure expansion, economic growth, and social welfare in their respective regions, addressing long-standing developmental gaps and fostering balanced national progress.

The SWDC, championed by Senator Gbenga Daniel, and the SSDC, spearheaded by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, were passed by the Senate in late 2024. Their establishment follows the North-West Development Commission (NWDC) and the South-East Development Commission (SEDC), which President Tinubu signed into law in July 2024.

With this move, all six geopolitical zones now have dedicated development commissions, ensuring a more structured approach to regional advancement.

These commissions are poised to be catalysts for industrial expansion, job creation, and improved social services. Senate President Godswill Akpabio hailed Tinubu’s decision, emphasizing that these bodies will empower communities, bridge developmental disparities, and strengthen national unity.
