A senior community health worker at Agbaluku Arigidi Primary Health Centre in Akoko NorthWest Local Government area of Ondo State, Mrs Dupe Olowoyeye, has urged pregnant women and nursing mothers to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their children from cold-related illnesses.
Olowoyeye gave the advice while speaking with THE HOPE, in an exclusive interview, against the backdrop of the cold weather being experienced in the area, stressing the need for mothers to adhere to health instructions provided by health workers during antenatal and postnatal visits.
She said children, particularly infants, needed adequate protection from the cold through the use of warm clothing and the provision of warm meals appropriate for their age.
“Children need warm food and clothes that can protect them from the cold, especially during this period of the year, to prevent cold-related illnesses,” Olowoyeye said.
She urged pregnant women and nursing mothers to take seriously the health advice given at health centres, noting that proper care was essential to safeguarding the health of both mothers and their children.
According to her, mothers should not ignore health instructions given by medical personnel, as such guidance was important for maintaining their well-being and that of their babies.
Olowoyeye also encouraged mothers to visit healthcare facilities whenever they noticed unusual symptoms in their children instead of delaying treatment.
“I want to encourage pregnant women and nursing mothers to visit health facilities in their communities whenever they need medical attention. They should also follow the instructions given to them by health workers,” she said.
She added that the government had established at least one health facility in each political ward in Ondo State, with qualified personnel available to provide healthcare services to residents.
She urged mothers to take advantage of the facilities to obtain professional advice on maternal and child health, particularly during periods of cold weather.
