Ahead of the November 16 gubernatorial election in Ondo State, candidates from 17 political parties have signed a peace accord, pledging commitment to a peaceful electoral process. The National Peace Committee organized the accord signing in Akure, where party candidates and state chairmen pledged to avoid election violence.
Signatories included candidates such as Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa (APC), Agboola Ajayi (PDP), Gbenga Edema (NNPP), Bamidele Akingboye (SDP), Sola Ebiseni (LP), and Abass Mimiko (ZLP).
Chairman of the National Peace Committee, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, urged all parties to maintain democratic principles and avoid vote trading, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful election. INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu also voiced confidence in a calm election environment, promising enhanced logistics and reporting no security issues so far.
“I urge the people of Ondo State to vote freely for candidates of their choice and reject vote trading, which undermines democracy,” he said.
Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, represented by DIG Sylvester Abiodun Alabi, assured of comprehensive security measures, with 34,657 police officers to be deployed across polling locations.
