With the directive of the Federal Government for restriction of movement in Lagos and Abuja FCT since Monday, 30th March now in full force; and that of Ogun state to begin on Friday 03rd April 2020, law enforcement agencies have huge task on their hands and have stepped up efforts to monitor and ensure compliance of the citizenry.

Though the restriction order is meant to be a total lockdown, it exempts persons in essential services such as health care, food processing, petroleum distribution, power sector, banks, telecommunications, media and private security to move around upon proper identification and reason for movement.

Manning the roads and ensuring traffic safety are the officers of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) who were seen going about their duty with professionalism across the megacity.

Speaking with Oki Samson of Trek Africa Newspaper, the Sector Commander of FRSC Lagos, Hyginus Omeje whom Trek Africa Newspaper found monitoring personally at the border between Ogun and Lagos of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway stated that no interstate travels are allowed except those that have been exempted and they have to identify themselves and tell the purpose of their movement.

At the spot, the FRSC Sector Commander challenged a vehicle driver, ‘no commercial vehicle should be seen on the road. We are going to impound your vehicle and hand you over to the police for investigation.’

Containerized vehicles moving towards the Ports Authority were also checked, ‘they are part of those exempted so as to go and lift goods from the ports that you and I will use.’

On his part, a police officer who is attached to the Ogun State Police Command also monitoring traffic movement on the borders, SP Simire Hillary added: ‘We are checking the particulars of moving vehicles because there are certain people allowed to move around. Examples are tankers, medical doctors, and pressmen. We want to ensure they should be on the road. I have seen compliance from the people.’

The restriction order given by the Federal Government is expected to nip the spread of the virus among citizens in the bud.
