Nigeria’s telecom backbone narrowly escaped a major disruption after swift intervention by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) persuaded the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NOGASA) to shelve a planned nationwide strike.

According a press statement signed by the Head, Public Affairs, Nnenna Ukoha, it states that the action, if it had gone ahead, would have cut diesel supply to telecom sites across the country—crippling the generators that keep networks running and potentially plunging millions into digital silence.

At the heart of the resolution was President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Executive Order on Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII), which recognises telecommunications facilities as vital national assets requiring maximum protection. Guided by this mandate, NSA Mallam Nuhu Ribadu convened high-level talks with NOGASA leaders, while the NCC provided technical and regulatory insight to underline the disastrous consequences of any service outage—spanning national security, economic stability, and daily life.

The dialogue yielded a breakthrough agreement, averting what could have been a connectivity crisis of national proportions.

“Telecommunications infrastructure is the backbone of our digital economy,” Ribadu stressed, warning that any disruption—whether from vandalism, theft, construction damage, or supply chain breakdown—can send shockwaves through every sector.

For now, Nigeria’s networks remain powered and its digital lifelines intact, but the incident underscores just how vulnerable and vital the country’s telecom arteries are.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has applauded the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for its decisive leadership in safeguarding Nigeria’s critical national assets, following the peaceful resolution of a dispute that threatened to disrupt the country’s telecommunications services.

The Commission also commended the maturity and understanding shown by all parties in recognising the strategic importance of keeping the nation’s telecom networks running without interruption.

Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, stressed that the Commission will continue to enforce strict technical standards for deploying and maintaining telecom infrastructure, while deepening collaboration with stakeholders to protect these vital facilities.

“Mediation remains one of our most effective tools for building consensus and avoiding unnecessary disruptions,” Maida said. “Telecom infrastructure is a shared national asset—it powers communication with loved ones, drives business transactions, supports healthcare, enables education, and anchors our participation in the global digital economy.”

The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to working hand-in-hand with security agencies, industry players, and the public to ensure Nigeria’s telecom backbone remains protected, resilient, and reliable for everyone.
