Abuja, Nigeria – December 18, 2024

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released a shocking report revealing that 26.53 million households in Nigeria reported experiencing crime in 2023-2024. The report also shows that a staggering N2.23 trillion was paid in ransom to kidnappers during the same period.

*Key Findings from the NBS Report*

– 65% of households affected by kidnapping were forced to pay ransom, with an average payment of N2.67 million.
– 4.14 million households experienced home robbery, but only 36.3% reported the incidents to the police.
– The North-West region recorded the highest number of crime incidents (14.4 million), while the South-East had the lowest (6.18 million).
– The total ransom paid to kidnappers (N2.23 trillion) is a significant concern, with many questioning the role of financial institutions in facilitating these transactions.

*The Need for Enhanced Drug Abuse Prevention and Technology-Driven Solutions*

Furthermore, the report underscores the need to address the rising issue of drug abuse, which is a significant factor contributing to the menace of kidnapping and other crimes.

“To effectively combat crime and kidnapping in Nigeria, it is essential that we enhance our efforts to prevent drug abuse and introduce technology-driven solutions to curtail the menace,” said Prince Ache Julius Ogu, CEO of RAPNEC NG.

“We must leverage technology, such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and digital forensics, to track and prosecute kidnappers, as well as to identify and support victims of drug abuse.”
