National Grid Collapses Again, Ninth Blackout In 2024 Hits Nigeria

The Nigerian national grid has reportedly suffered another collapse, according to a post from the Nigeria National Grid’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, marking the ninth such incident in 2024.

This setback follows a series of grid collapses late last month, where three incidents occurred within a single week, sparking widespread power outages across the nation.

Trek Africa Newspaper reports that around 3 PM on Tuesday, the account @NationalGridNg announced, “BREAKING: National Grid suffers another setback. Restoration soon!”

As of this report, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has not yet issued an official statement to confirm or clarify the reasons for this latest outage, leaving many Nigerians uncertain about the cause of the disruption.

The first grid collapse of the year happened on February 4, when power generation dropped dramatically from 2,407 megawatts to just 31MW, leading to a total shutdown by 1 PM.

This recurring instability in the national grid continues to impact daily life and business activities across Nigeria, heightening public concern over the reliability of the country’s power infrastructure.

The minister of power, Adebayo Adelabu last month said the grid collapses are almost inevitable in Nigeria given the deplorable state of the country’s power infrastructure.

The minister also said there is a need to have power grids in different regions or states to put an end to incessant grid collapses. Adelabu said this on Wednesday when he unveiled Hexing Livoltek, an electricity metre manufacturing company in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

According to him, having multiple power grids in each region and state would ensure stability. He noted that the decentralisation of the power sector would help the plan to build grids in each region, saying this was made possible by the Electricity Act signed by President Bola Tinubu in 2023.
