The National President of the Nigeria – Agro Multipurpose Cooperative Society, Farmrade John Mayaki, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policy to ban the export of raw shea nuts for purpose of local processing.
Farmrade Mayaki who said the policy will unlock the country’s full potential in the global shea market added that the long overlooked humble shea nut in our agricultural sector is now being primed to rival cocoa and palm oil as a billion-dollar export commodity.
In a statement made available to newsmen, Mayaki described the development as a new dawn for the country’s agricultural economy.
He said, “just as cocoa once defined Nigeria’s agricultural power and palm oil remains central to our economic heritage, shea nut is set to become the next frontier. I think what the president has done was to open the doors for Nigeria to take its rightful place in this global industry.
“The paradox of Nigeria’s shea dominance is that you have abundant supply but minimal returns but now, this ban is expected to reverse the ugly trend, boost local processing and job creation. This policy promises to ensure that the sweat of shea nut workers translate to wealth and same would be retained within the country.
“I think this policy is not just about economics but about dignity and same could transform the entire communities where shea nuts are being farmed.
“Shea is no longer a hidden treasure but going to assume Nigeria’s next agricultural goldmine. With the right leadership and policy implementation, shea nut will stand proudly alongside cocoa and palm oil as one of Nigeria’s defining exports”, Mayaki said.
