LG Election: Whether the Person is Good or Bad, You Must Support the Party Candidate – Obasa Tells APC Members

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has come under heavy fire from members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following his controversial statement that party members must support any candidate chosen by the party—regardless of competence.

Speaking at a recent political gathering, Obasa declared:
“Any candidate that APC presents—whether the person is good or bad—as long as the party has chosen that person, you have no choice but to support them, unless you are ready to leave the party.”

The Speaker’s comment was targeted at members allegedly opposing APC candidates at the local level ahead of the forthcoming council elections. But rather than rallying the party, his words have triggered backlash, with many accusing him of overstepping his authority and stifling internal democracy.

Several APC members who spoke to Lagos Reporters expressed outrage, branding Obasa’s position as autocratic and harmful to the party’s future.

“Obasa is a legislator, not the party’s conscience,” one senior party member said. “He is overstepping his boundaries. Party politics should be built on consensus, not command. This is the same attitude that cost us support in past elections.”

Another grassroots leader in Lagos described Obasa’s statement as “the very reason why competent candidates are often sidelined.”

“It’s this kind of imposition that will cause APC to lose in 2027,” he warned.
“You can’t continue to ignore capable aspirants and expect loyalty from frustrated members.”

While some viewed Obasa’s stance as a call for unity and discipline within the party ranks, many believe it reflects deeper problems within APC’s internal structure—where loyalty is often placed above competence.

Despite the criticism, Obasa stood his ground, insisting that loyalty to the party’s decisions remains a non-negotiable principle for true members.

Lagos Reporters will continue to monitor the unfolding tension within the APC as local government elections approach, and internal cracks widen over candidate selection and party discipline.
