The recent killing of two policemen in Enugu state had continued to attract reactions especially because the ungodly act looks like is becoming a norm in the country particularly, the South East.

The gallant policemen met their untimely death in active service as they were gunned down during a routine stop and search along the Presidential Road area of the state.

The unwarranted killing of the policemen is certainly unacceptable, barbaric and unjust. It raises the question on the security of lives and property of the ordinary citizens if those saddled with such herculian task are usually killed in this manner.

The latest incident quickly refesh our memory on the brutal killings of seventeen military men including some senior officers in Okuoma community in Ugheli Local Government Area of Delta state. The immediate reactions from the Federal Government, the Military and even the police to Nigerians with words of assurance was that this will not repeat itself. Then, how do we describe this?

The truth is that those who have taken up the responsibility of protecting the larger society also deserves some level of protection from the same society. This may sound amazing to some people reading this piece but remember the common saying that “Security of Lives and Property is the duty of all”.

For the souls of our fallen heroes not to die in vain, the people of Enugu state must assist the security operatives to fish out those behind this dastardly act for the law to take its full course. However, just like the case of the killing of the seventeen Soldiers in Okuoma community in which the killers have not been found till now 58 days after, one could easily conclude that such will be the case of the murdered policemen in Enugu state.

The state Governor, Peter Mbah has announced a 10m naira reward for anyone with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the killers of the policemen who came in SUV Jeeps.

He also alleged that the killers are members of the Eastern Security Network, ESN, the military arm of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra. The Governor assured that everything within the ambit of the law would be done to unravel their killers and bring them to book to serve as a strong warning to others.

At this juncture, permit me to say that our security operatives indeed need to change their modus operandi because it beats one imagination the way the so called unknown gunmen sniffed lives out of our security men in quick succession.

Where is the place of intelligence and sophisticated equipment in the work of our security operatives that they have become so vulnerable to the fire power of the enemy.

In my final submission, I believe the society will be a better place for all to live if there is adequate security of lives and property. This will also encourage businesses both local and foreign to thrive. Remember that Security is the duty of all, to fast track socio-economic development of our dear country. God Bless Nigeria.
