LAND MATTERS: POLICE OUGHT NOT TO BE INVOLVED EXCEPT… – SP HUNDEYIN

Disputes over land and other landed property are one of the very common issues which arise in this society for which many people seek redress from the Police. This ought not to be so if what the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Benjamin Hundeyin said is anything to go by.

The spokesperson added that the Nigerian Police Force will only intervene when there is breakdown of law in the process of land dispute.

Baring his mind on the matter in a tweet, SP Hundeyin shared: ‘Land matter is not a Police case. It’s a civil case! Go and sue.

However, where it degenerates into a breakdown of law and order, we will definitely step in and focus on the criminal aspect only. One of our mandates remains preservation of law and order.’

Thus, the proper procedure, Trek Africa Newspaper can report, is that land cases are civil cases which should be addressed by a law court and not a case to be handled by the Police.

The Nigeria Police can however step in when the issue will disrupt public peace and tranquility. To reiterate, land matter is a civil case that ought to be forwarded to the Court not police station.

The Police are only concerned with ensuring law and order in the society in a situation whereby such disputes is degenerating and disturbing harmony in the society.
