Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olanrewaju Ishola, has appealed for calm and restraint amid plans by some groups to protest on October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day.
At a stakeholder meeting on Friday, September 27, CP Ishola emphasized the need for peaceful coexistence, stressing that the police will protect protesters’ rights while ensuring the safety of all citizens.
“We will not stop the protest, but people should go about it in a civilized manner,” Ishola said. “We have reports that some miscreants may hijack the protest, and we must prevent anarchy.”
Representatives from various organizations, including the Nigeria Labour Congress, Muslim Rights Concern, and National Association of Nigerian Students, attended the meeting.
Labour leader Comrade Fumi Sesi cautioned against anti-people policies, urging the government to engage citizens and address the hardships faced by Nigerians.
Professor Ishaq Akintola of the Muslim Rights Concern described the planned protest as “sacrilegious” and “disrespectful” to the nation.
NANS Chairman Alimi Lekan Idris opposed the protest, advocating for “scientific aluta” and round-table discussions instead.
CP Ishola assured the gathering that the police would maintain professionalism and engage with the community to prevent violence.
“We are partners in progress, and I urge citizens to trust the police,” Ishola said. “Let us work together to maintain peace in Lagos.”
