Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo, the outgoing Secretary-General of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), is dead.

Trek Africa Newspaper reports that Barkindo, a Nigerian representative died at about 11pm on Tuesday night.

He was earlier received by President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, and later gave a speech at the ongoing Nigeria oil and gas conference (NOG).

The Group Managing Director ofNigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Ltd, Mele Kyari confirmed his death in a tweet on Wednesday morning.

“We lost our esteemed Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo. He died at about 11pm yesterday 5th July 2022. Certainly a great loss to his immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, the OPEC and the global energy community. Burial arrangements will be announced shortly,” Kyari wrote.

There is still little information regarding the cause of his sudden death despite looking healthy when he was received by Buhari at the presidential villa and he most recently spoke at the ongoing NOG conference.

Barkindo’s tenure as OPEC Secretary General ends in July.

In January, Kuwaiti candidate Haitham Al-Ghais was voted as the new OPEC Secretary-General.
