Dr. Solomon Arase, former Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP) is dead.

The former police chief reportedly died at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja on Sunday, 31st August, 2025.

Arase, who served as Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police, was later appointed Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

Before his appointment as IGP, he headed the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the force’s top intelligence arm.

Born on June 21, 1956, in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State, Arase studied Political Science at Ahmadu Bello University, graduating in 1980, and joined the Nigeria Police Force on December 1, 1981.

He went on to obtain a Law degree from the University of Benin and a Master’s degree from the University of Lagos.

He retired from the Police on June 21, 2016, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.

 

In January 2023, the late President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him Chairman of the Police Service Commission. He remained in that position until June 2024, when he was removed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
