The highly cerebral former Rapid Response Squad (RRS) commander in Lagos, who is presently the commander of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), has been promoted to the position of commissioner of police (CP).

The police service commission has approved the elevation of 5,038 officers including 33 deputy commissioners of police.

In a statement released by Ikechukwu Ani, the head of the press and public relations of the police force, the appointment and promotions were part of the highlights of the 19th plenary meeting of the commission which held in Abuja on Tuesday.

The event was presided over by Clara Bata Ogunbiyi, the commission’s acting chairperson.

Kayode Egbetokun, assistant inspector general (AIG) has been promoted to deputy inspector general (DIG) of police. Twenty-four CPs were also promoted to AIG, while thirty-three deputy commissioners were promoted to CPs.

On Tuesday, Security Focus gathered that the ever-amiable Disu and the listed senior police officers converged at the Police Service Commission (PSC) secretariat, explaining to a panel of interviewers why they should be promoted.

Ogunbiyi has urged the newly promoted officers to rededicate themselves to the service of the nation. She added that “the commission will continue to ensure that police promotions are regular and motivational to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Officers”.

DISU’S PROFILE

In August 2021, Disu was appointed by Alkali Baba, Inspector General of Police (IGP), to replace Abba Kyari as IRT commander.

Before heading the IGP’s IRT unit, he was the RRS commander in Lagos, where he showed his worth as a transformational cop. He was notably well celebrated and respected amongst Lagosians for training the RRS officials, as his men were cordial and tactical in their delivery.

One of Disu’s moves at the RRS was to rebrand the squad. His men were popularly referred to as #TheGoodGuys.

As RRS commander, he led a pragmatic and revolutionary security ideology that brought about the training of officers on emotional intelligence, anger control management and de-escalation of crisis.

His model of policing is largely predicated on the principle of ‘policing by consent’ with emphasis on the 4Es of engaging, educating, explaining and enforcing the law.

Also, during the EndSARS protests against police brutality in 2020, Disu reportedly released his command’s ambulances to help protesters who need medical care.

Disu holds two master’s degrees in public administration from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba in 2010, and also in criminology, security, and legal psychology at the Lagos State University (LASU) in 2022.

On Sunday, July 31 2022, Disu won the silver medal at the 33rd US Open Judo Championship, where he contested in the minus 100 kg category of the veteran division.

Since becoming a judoka in 1986, he has won one gold medal at the national sports festival in 1990 in Bauchi, two gold medals at the Nigerian police games and a silver medal at the armed forces and police games.

In November 2021, Disu won another gold medal at the first veteran championship organised by the Nigerian police.
