INTERVENTION: Security Stakeholders In South West Convene Private Security Governance Forum

The African Law Foundation (AFRILAW) in collaboration with Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance convey a forum for south west zone stakeholders in the security sector to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities inherent in the sector and how to leverage on them.

The founder of AFRILAW, Barrister Chinwike Okereke in an interview said the program is very apt considering the rate of insecurity bedeveling our society. He said recommendations elicited from the stakeholders discussion will be forwarded to relevant government agencies and regulators to do the needful. The needful which include legal framework, the issue of human rights abuses, the issue of illegal companies operating, the issue of poor conduct and operational standard, among others.

“The relevant government agencies are aware we are here. The Ministry of interior, the agency and civil defence are aware we are here. We want to take the feedback to them, engage them in policy and regulatory advocacy to see how they can mainstream the ideas and recommendations in the effort to improve the sector

“There is issue with legal reform, we are working with them to see how the laws and regulations are improved”. Okereke said

The Executive Director Center for 21st Century Issues (C21st) Mrs Gbemisola Titilope made a presentation on the baseline study on private security governance in Nigeria. It hovers on understanding the private security industry landscape. The challenges and recent progress within the private security industry in Nigeria.
Other panelists at the forum include Mrs Makinde Aramide, HOD PGC Department, NSCDC Lagos State Command, Mr Tunde Mumuni State Chairman, ALPSPN Lagos State Chapter, Mr Fred Nwogu, CEO New Nigeria Foundation and Mr Jonah Eromo, MSS, Global Africa Rep.

Barrister Okereke said Multi stakeholders approach adopted is to bring civil society, media and the regulators in the security industry under a room, so we can identify solutions that will enhance the sector.
