The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially complied with a court ruling mandating it to recognize the leadership of Julius Abure within the Labour Party. In a letter sent to Abure and Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the Commission’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, extended an invitation for the Labour Party to participate in the upcoming fourth consultative meeting with other political entities.

This development follows a significant decision from a Federal High Court in Abuja, which deemed the 2024 Labour Party national convention, held in Nnewi in March, as valid and constitutional, adhering to all relevant laws in Nigeria. Justice Emeka Nwite’s ruling specifically instructed INEC to acknowledge the Labour Party’s National Working Committee led by Barrister Julius Abure and to extend all necessary privileges.

Following a meeting with INEC on Thursday, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the Labour Party’s National Secretary, expressed his satisfaction with INEC’s adherence to the court order, noting that the party has regained its rightful place among the 18 political parties. Ibrahim acknowledged the past exclusion but emphasized the importance of moving forward, particularly with the upcoming Anambra governorship election as announced by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

He urged party members to rally behind Abure’s leadership, stating, “What transpired is merely a family affair, and we will work together to restore confidence within the party. The Labour Party will emerge stronger, but we need everyone’s involvement in the rebuilding process. It is a no victor, no vanquish situation; we are all winners. The party is supreme, and every member must strive toward achieving our set targets.
