High-Tension Climber Who Called for Tinubu’s Resignation in Psychiatric Hospital

The Adamawa State Police Command has reported that 30-year-old Abdullahi Mohammed, who climbed a 33 kV high-tension electricity pole in Mayo-Belwa last Friday, has been admitted to the Yola Psychiatric Hospital for a mental evaluation.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Suleiman Nguroje told PUNCH in an interview that Mohammed is currently undergoing psychiatric tests at a facility within the premises of the specialist hospital in Yola.
Nguroje explained, “When the police from the Mayo-Belwa division rescued Abdullahi Mohammed from the high-tension electricity pole, they discovered some hard drugs on him, including green leaves he admitted were Indian hemp.”
He added, “During his interaction with the police, he confessed to using Indian hemp and other hard drugs. His behavior was abnormal, prompting us to take him to the psychiatric hospital for a thorough medical examination. We are still awaiting the medical results before deciding on the next steps.”
The Adamawa Police Command rescued and arrested Mohammed last Saturday night after he had climbed the electricity pole, insisting that President Bola Tinubu must resign before he would come down.
The police spokesperson described the man’s actions as suicidal and mentioned that attempting suicide is a criminal offense under Nigerian law. “You know that attempting to commit suicide is a criminal offense under our Constitution, so we will charge him in court,” Nguroje stated.
He further emphasized the police’s constitutional duty to protect lives and property, asserting that anyone attempting to take their own life will face the full consequences of the law.
On the morning of the incident, which coincided with the market day in Mayo-Belwa, the young man climbed the 33 kV high-tension electricity pole along the Yola-Jalingo highway, declaring he would not descend until the Nigerian President vacated the presidential villa.
The Adamawa Police Command engaged local residents to help persuade Mohammed to come down from the pole, which they successfully achieved on Saturday night. Mohammed hails from Gashaka town in Taraba State.
