Let your food be your medicine affirmed the father of medicine, Hippocrates. This is what popular Chef Tilewa Odedina, professionally Chef Tilly indicated during her masterclass at the recent GTCO food and drink festival which was held at the GTCentre, Plot 1, Water Corporation Drive, Oniru, Lagos.

Her presentation was not just theoretical but based on her personal experience with food as a medium for healing. ‘Food healed me, and food can heal you too. Using food in the right ways, using the right ingredients, using the right techniques, and using it in the right ways, she said.

‘Food was, and I believe that God created certain ingredients to actually heal the body. A lot of people don’t have access to medicine or doctors but they are still healed. The portions you use, how you add the food together, all these things can actually aid healing. Look at moringa that I spoke about today. Moringa is medicine. This is something that you can get in your house, and you can cook, so again, food can be medicine.’

The GTCO Food and Drink festival really promotes the African culture by bringing in, first of all, allowing a lot of vendors to come on and show what they do with food, you see different kinds of food made by Africans, inspired by Africans. Also having an African like me on the stage will is great. GTCO is really showcasing it. And again, allowing the vendors to sign up for free, there’s nothing else that can be more supportive than that, to be honest.

My advice to young chefs is to chase your passion, trust yourself and trust the process. Believe in yourself. The journey will make sense, I promise’, Chef Tilly concluded.
