GREENS OFF THE GROUND: SAMSON OGBOLE’S PATH TO REVOLUTIONISING AGRICULTURE IN NIGERIA

Inventive Farmer Ogbole says ‘food production should not be seasonal because hunger is not’.

Bursting age-long agricultural norms in Nigeria is Farmer Samson Ogbole and his ingenious concept of planting in the air. Yes, you read right! Samson is planting in the air and he has proven that plants do not need soil to grow.

All that a plant need is ‘nutrient, water, temperature, humidity, etc. but not soil’ unequivocally stated Farmer Ogbole in #Reminisense the #TweetChat series on Twitter last Tuesday. A visit to Soilless Farm Lab owned by the inventive farmer will demonstrate how yams are been plucked in the air as against the tradition of ‘you can only dig the soil for yam harvest, not pluck in the air’.

Farmer Samson Ogbole noted on the origin of soilless farming, ‘The method itself isn’t new. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has been using it for over 5 decades. All I am doing is domestication of the system for our environment so we can use same without any importation.’ He added that the farming system will play a huge role in ensuring food security because it guarantees that food production will not be seasonal just as hunger is not.

With soilless farming, Nigerians can rest assured of consistency, affordability, availability, stability, and healthiness of food. It also promises to be of immense support to the efforts at overcoming the climate emergency worldwide.

Interestingly, the alumni of Harvard Business School graced the #Reminisense the #TweetChat series on its first year anniversary. The virtual conversation anchored by Abayomi Oyelami @yomioyelami holds every Tuesday on Twitter at 6.00 pm GMT.
