GIRL CHILD EDUCATION AND MENSTRUAL HEALTH – KEBBI FIRST LADY MEET WITH PROCTER AND GAMBLE

Following a successful but limited “Always Keeping Girls in School program in Kebbi state, Dr Zainab Bagudu met with Mrs Tope Iluyemi a top management of P and G to propose an expansion of the engagement between Procter and Gamble and Girls Secondary schools in Kebbi.
Also discussed was how to intensify advocacy to remove VAT from sanitary towels and boost local production.
1 in 10 girls in Africa miss school because of their periods each year. Some girls simply don’t have access to sanitary products; others face discrimination and stigma during their periods; others still don’t have educational resources to inform them about safe, sanitary hygiene practices.
In South Africa 86% of women and girls use pads, in Kenya 29% but in Ethiopia it is 9% whilst in Nigeria 8%!!
To this end, the Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced various measures to ease the burdens of menstrual periods on the girl child.
It is a social moral and economic imperative that the Federal government of Nigeria promotes policies that support the development of the girl child towards the actualisation of the SDGs.
