Fashion: Ooni tasks governors wife on local fabrics

African fashion has been described as a unique means of identity, culture and communication.

The wife of Kwara State Governor, Mrs OluFolake AbdulRazaq stated this at the just concluded African Fashion Week Nigeria held In Lagos.

She explained that the Kwara state has a rich history of producing local fabrics such as “Aso Ofi and Adire”.

Mrs Abdulrazaq expressed delight that despite the influx of imported textile materials, the African attire is still been used on many occasions because of their quality and beauty.

According to the Kwara State first lady, designer’s of this indigenous fabrics are creative, talented and hardworking people who are ready to meet up with emerging trends in the fashion industry.

Mrs Abdulrazaq who told the gathering that plans were underway by the Kwara State Government to revive the moribund textile industries in a bid to create more jobs and boost the state IGR.

The first lady of Ekiti State, Erelu Bisi Fayemi said the exhibition is not just about showcasing the beauty of African fashion but to encourage youths to tap into the employment opportunities in it.

The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, who described Nigerian youths as highly productive urged the three first Ladies in attendance to redouble their efforts by involving their counterparts across the federation.

Earlier in a remark, former Director-General of Nigeria Tourism Development Cooperation Mrs Omotayo Omotosho said the fashion industry if properly harnessed has the capacity of making Nigerian graduates employer of Labour rather than job seekers, called on Government and organised private sector to make it work.

Highlights of the event were the display of various made in Nigeria attires such as Aso Oke, Adire and Sanyaa by models which the three first Ladies of Kwara, Ekiti and Ogun states including the Ooni of Ife thrilled the audience to a symbolic fashion parade.
