BRT Lane Enforcement Resumes October 6 on Eko Bridge, Odo Iyalaro…

Lagos motorists using Eko Bridge and Odo Iyalaro will from Monday, October 6, 2025, once again face strict enforcement of the dedicated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes, following the completion of ongoing road repairs in the state.

The enforcement had been suspended on July 2, 2025, to ease traffic congestion during the repair works on the Ifako/Ogudu Bridge. With the project now completed and the road fully reopened, the state government says the suspension has been lifted.

Announcing the resumption, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport Education and Innovation, Tobi Idowu, said relevant agencies have been directed to monitor compliance and sanction violators.

“Motorists are strongly advised to comply with this directive,” Idowu said. “The enforcement of the BRT lanes is to ensure orderliness, reduce travel time, and make the best use of the infrastructure provided for public transportation.”

The BRT system, introduced in 2008, is one of the state’s flagship traffic management projects designed to provide faster and more reliable transport for commuters. Dedicated lanes for BRT buses have often been the subject of disputes between private motorists and enforcement officers, with drivers sometimes arguing that the restrictions contribute to traffic build-up.

The state government, however, maintains that proper enforcement of the lanes is crucial for the smooth running of the scheme and for discouraging the misuse of infrastructure meant for mass transit.

Idowu reiterated the government’s stance: “This decision reflects our continuous commitment to organized traffic management and the efficient use of the BRT system, which has become a vital part of daily commuting for thousands of Lagos residents.”

With the repairs concluded and the roads back in use, officials say motorists who flout the dedicated lanes should expect zero tolerance from traffic agencies starting Monday.
