APAPA-IGANMU LCDA HOLDS SPELLING BEE COMPETITION

The role of education in national development cannot be overemphasized. It is the bedrock of society. It builds bridges between cultures. It connects generations. It offers bright opportunities for the young and adult alike.

The Spelling Bee Competition pioneered by Sen. Oluremi Shade Tinubu OON has boosted education in Lagos state in the past two decades since it was established. And it is not waning in impact. The Apapa-Iganmu LCDA held its 2019 edition of the local council finals at the council headquarters during the week.

The competitive program produced three prize winners each at the primary and secondary category. At the primary level, Udoka Favour emerged winner after getting the highest marks followed by Falade Islamiat, and Lukmon Nimotalahi. In the secondary category, Ademola Waris received the top prize followed by Chidubem Samuel and Kenneth-Eke Mary Jane.

Speaking at the event, Apapa Iganmu LCDA boss, Mrs. Funmilayo Akande-Mohammed said the mission of the program started by Sen. Oluremi Tinubu is to catch them young which will enable children to fulfill the great future ahead. She added: ‘I enjoy empowering and supporting the education of our children. For example, look at the person who emerged winner this year, he came second last year but now he is the first place. And I hope he will become the One-Day Governor this year.’

On her part, Ms. Ayodeji Johnson representing Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Education District IV said: ‘The students have performed very well having been practicing for a while. You can see that the children even have an understanding of diction and phonetics because the teachers have been teaching them Oral English, so they are used to phonetics.’

She added: ‘The next stage is the State Finals. It is quite competitive. Whoever emerges the winner becomes the One-Day Governor and will have the opportunity to live in the State House for one or two days, meet the Governor and serve as Governor of the state.’

The winner of the primary category, 10-year-old Primary 6 pupil of David Savage Memorial Nursery and Primary School, Udoka Favour shared: ‘This is my first time at the Spelling Bee. I am happy and I thank God for everything. I will put more effort and pray very well concerning my education. God bless our Chairman, and be with her in all her endeavours.’

Runner-up at the secondary category, Chidubem Samuel of Sari Iganmu Senior Secondary School said: ‘I thank God for everything. I will work harder next time.’

Unable to hide his joy, the winner of the secondary category and representative of Apapa-Iganmu LCDA at the State Finals, Ademola Waris said: ‘I feel happy. I am glad that I came first today. I was second the first time I came for this competition.’

The 15-year old student of Iganmu Junior High school shared on his formula for success, ‘I studied every night and this helped me to listen to the pronunciation and be able to spell.’
