AIG Towuru orders disciplinary measures against 5 policemen who extorted man of N3m

The Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone Six Calabar, Jonathan Towuru, has taken decisive action against five policemen accused of forcibly extorting three million Naira from an individual at gunpoint. Towuru emphasized the importance of such actions as a deterrent to others.
In a press statement dated July 1, 2024, e-signed by SP Nelson Okpabi, the Zonal PPRO, Towuru confirmed that the five officers have been apprehended and an investigation is underway. He underscored the zone’s zero-tolerance policy towards criminal behavior among its officers.
The incident allegedly occurred when police officers patrolling the Ikom-Calabar highway engaged in corrupt practices and unprofessional conduct, leading to widespread complaints from motorists and other users regarding intimidation and extortion at numerous checkpoints.
“The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 6 headquarters Calabar, condemns the unprofessional conduct of the officers accused of abducting and fraudulently extorting N3,000,000,” the statement read.
“A thorough investigation has been ordered to uncover the truth behind these allegations, ensuring that appropriate disciplinary actions are taken to deter such misconduct in the future,” it continued.
The statement reiterated the commitment of the Zone to maintaining law and order without tolerating any form of criminality among its officers responsible for crime prevention and order maintenance.
