Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has officially enacted the amended Abia State Security Trust Fund bill, which was recently passed by the State House of Assembly.
During the signing ceremony, Otti expressed confidence that this new law will institutionalize funding for security efforts across the state, making the process more organized and efficient. He noted that, until now, most security funding had come from the state government and individual philanthropists.
“We have now empowered the trust fund with the necessary authority to drive our security initiatives effectively,” Otti remarked. “The state’s security funding, up until now, has been mostly handled by the government and public-spirited citizens. This new trust fund will streamline and institutionalize how we handle these funds moving forward.”
The governor also urged citizens to continue their support for security measures, which have contributed to the relative peace and stability in the region. He assured that maintaining security would remain a top priority for his administration.
Otti took the opportunity to thank the State House of Assembly for amending the existing law, which he described as outdated and inadequate to address current security challenges. “Together, we identified the need for a more robust framework and worked with the Assembly to bring this bill to life,” he stated, acknowledging the support of lawmakers.
Hon. Augustine Meregini, the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, explained that the new law, the Abia State Security Trust Fund Law No. 5 of 2024, will ensure the establishment of a dedicated fund for acquiring essential security equipment to improve the state’s overall security operations.
Mr. Obiamaraije Stanley, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Abia State Security Trust Fund, expressed his gratitude for the Governor’s support and reaffirmed the board’s commitment to fulfilling its duties under the new law.
