The Federal Government has made it clear that it will not entertain any calls for secession from any part of Nigeria. Over the weekend, officials emphasized the importance of national unity, stating that coexistence is essential for the nation.

Recently, various groups have advocated for secession, harkening back to Nigeria’s unification in 1914 under British colonial rule, which brought together the Southern and Northern protectorates. Nigeria gained independence in 1960 but has since grappled with issues of national unity, including a civil war from 1967 to 1970.

During a peace meeting in Plateau State, Defence Minister Mohammed Abubakar Badaru reiterated the government’s strong opposition to any attempts to divide the country. He warned that secessionist demands could lead to disunity and discord among Nigerians. As Defence Minister, Badaru affirmed his commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity against both external and internal threats.

He stated, “The Federal Government will not entertain any demands that could cause division among Nigerians. Living together is not an option; it’s an obligation. This reflects the President’s unwavering commitment to combat any secessionist movements.”

Badaru expressed concern over recent violence in areas like Jol and Sho in Barkin Ladi and Riyom LGAs, which have resulted in loss of life and property despite the efforts of security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Army and Operation Safe Haven.

He also criticized those disrupting farming activities during the rainy season, worsening the ongoing farmers-herders conflict. “It is troubling that some individuals are intent on undermining farming efforts, especially now. The recurring clashes between farmers and cattle breeders are a significant concern,” he added, emphasizing the interdependence of both groups for survival.
