The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 26-year-old man, Nura Mas’ud, for allegedly setting his grandmother on fire.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Adam, disclosed the incident in a statement on Saturday.
According to Adam, the tragic event occurred on October 8, 2024, in Mu’azu village, Dan Gwanki ward, Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area. Nura Mas’ud reportedly went to his family home carrying a petrol canister, poured it on his 60-year-old grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, and set her ablaze.
The elderly woman was rushed to the hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries. Her death was confirmed by the attending medical doctor, and her body was handed over to her relatives for burial according to Islamic rites.
Adam stated that police detectives from the Sule Tankarkar Division swiftly arrested Mas’ud, who was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. During interrogation, the suspect admitted to the crime.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect suffers from mental illness and had been receiving treatment at Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital.
The statement added that Mas’ud became enraged after his grandmother repeatedly expressed concern about his physical appearance and health, which he had warned her to stop. Frustrated, he allegedly bought gasoline, poured it on her, and set her on fire.
The state Commissioner of Police, A.T. Abdullahi, has directed the SCID to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the suspect is prosecuted to serve as a warning to others.
