During a church service commemorating Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun explained that previous administrations had been subsidizing petrol not just for Nigerians but also for neighboring African countries.

He emphasized the need for Nigerians to endure the current hardships, stating that President Tinubu is committed to repositioning the nation for sustainable growth.

“The federal government, under the dynamic leadership of President Bola Tinubu, has swiftly undertaken bold initiatives to restructure our economy and avert bankruptcy. We must remain resilient,” he said. “Mr. President has removed the subsidy, which, if left unchecked, would have cost us ₦5.4 trillion by the end of 2024. Instead, we could invest these funds in enhancing our infrastructure and social services.”

Abiodun pointed out that the government’s infrastructure budget for this year stands at ₦6.7 trillion, highlighting that the subsidy would have significantly strained this budget had it not been addressed.

The Governor also urged Nigerians to refrain from participating in protests scheduled for October 1st, advocating for prayer and constructive engagement with the government instead. “Let us be resilient and continue to pray while maintaining our faith in Almighty God,” he urged.

He warned against those who incite discord and promote protests, violence, and civil disobedience, which often lead to vandalism and destruction. “We should engage constructively and collaborate with the government, as this administration is committed to inclusivity,” Governor Abiodun added.
