In a solemn gathering at its National Headquarters, the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo convened yesterday to honor the memory of its late President General, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who passed away on July 25, 2024. The Igbo apex socio-cultural organization announced that the burial of Iwuanyanwu will take place on September 25, 2024.
Presiding over the meeting, Ambassador Okey Emuchay, Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, expressed profound sadness at the loss of Iwuanyanwu, whom he described as “an exceptional diplomat, tenacious patriot, and erudite engineer.” Emuchay assured that Ohanaeze Ndigbo would continue to uphold the vision and mission of the late leader.
“We just had an emergency NEC meeting and are here to sign a condolence register in honor of Dr. E. C. Iwuanyanyu, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, who passed on last week Thursday. Indeed, a huge Iroko has fallen,” Emuchay stated. He highlighted the widespread tributes received from notable figures, including President of the Federal Republic, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Emeka Anyaoku, South East governors, and partners in the Southern and Middle Belt Forum.
Emuchay conveyed the organization’s prayers and support to Iwuanyanwu’s family, including his wife and children, and mentioned that a central burial committee would be established soon. In respect and honor of the late President General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has decided to skip the Igbo Day Celebration scheduled for September 29, 2024, which was to be hosted by Imo State.
Emuchay reassured members and supporters that Ohanaeze Ndigbo would remain steadfast and continue its work. “Consultations with our governors, elders, and stakeholders have begun. He [Iwuanyanwu] had wonderful ideas and visions for the Igbo nation and Nigeria, and collectively, we shall continue from where he stopped.”
The Secretary General called upon all state secretariats and diaspora chapters of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to open condolence registers, inviting people to convey their thoughts and prayers for the late President General.
Emuchay concluded, “It is not easy for us, the Igbo nation, and Nigeria. But we have been here before, we overcame, and we shall overcome again. He has passed on the baton, leaving us to continue from where he stopped. We are asking everyone to come and honor our departed leader, Chief Doctor E. C. Iwuanyanyu.”
