Nigeria Customs Opens Recruitment Complaint Review for Aggrieved Applicants

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has opened a review window for applicants dissatisfied with the outcome of its recent recruitment screening, inviting affected candidates to submit formal complaints for case-by-case assessment.

The Service said the decision followed concerns raised by applicants who appeared on the recruitment shortlist but were subsequently screened out and denied admission into the training college.

In a press statement issued on October 19, 2026, the NCS said the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, had met with some aggrieved applicants and directed a reappraisal of their complaints to ensure that legitimate concerns receive appropriate attention.

The Service, however, clarified that appearing on the final shortlist does not automatically guarantee enlistment, stressing that all candidates must satisfy the mandatory requirements for recruitment.

According to the NCS, the recruitment process involves several stages of verification, including credential and document checks, physical fitness and endurance assessments, medical examinations, age verification, drug screening and other prescribed requirements.

The Service disclosed that issues relating to substance abuse, excluding cigarettes and alcohol, physical fitness, medical records, age and submitted documentation were identified among 397 applicants during the screening exercise.

It added that some candidates were also disqualified over irregularities identified in their selection process.

The NCS said these findings underscored its determination to maintain established recruitment standards and ensure that only qualified candidates are considered for enlistment.

How Aggrieved Applicants Can Submit Complaints

To address genuine grievances, the Service has directed affected applicants to submit their details and complaints through its designated email address, **helpdesk@customs.gov.ng**.

Applicants have been advised to provide accurate information to facilitate the examination of their cases.

The Service explained that the review initiative was designed to give legitimate complaints appropriate attention while preserving the fairness, credibility and integrity of the recruitment exercise.

It further stated that applicants who take advantage of the review window would undergo fresh screening.

However, the NCS warned that the review would not amount to a waiver of established recruitment requirements or guarantee automatic admission into the training college.

The Service also cautioned that applicants found to have engaged in criminal conduct, including certificate fraud and other offences, would be referred for appropriate legal action and prosecution.

Customs Warns Against Compromising Recruitment Standards

The Service urged aggrieved applicants and members of the public to remain calm and use the designated channel to submit their complaints.

It assured the public that the review would be conducted in line with established procedures and the need to uphold accountability and transparency.

Reaffirming the Service’s position, the NCS said its management, under the leadership of Adeniyi, remained committed to a credible recruitment process.

It stressed that while genuine complaints would be considered, the Service would not compromise the standards required of personnel responsible for national security, border protection, revenue collection and public safety.

The latest development provides an opportunity for affected applicants to have their complaints examined, although the final outcome will depend on the findings of the review and their ability to meet the prescribed recruitment requirements.
