250 security personnel for Chief of Defence Staff half marathon

Two hundred and fifty personnel of the Nigerian military, security and intelligence agencies are to participate in the 4th  edition of Chief of Defence Staff Half Marathon Championship in Abuja.
The number also includes male and female veterans of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies.
The Chairman of the event’s Committee, Air vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, disclosed yesterday.

He said the event, which would be held on Saturday, December 9, would feature two events, 25.1 kilometre  for both male and female marathoners and 5 kilometre for veterans.

Marquis said the championship was aimed “to create an avenue for the members of Armed Forces and other security agencies and their personnel to engage in competitive sporting activities to improve their skills, discover new talents and interact with one another. Also, to sustain the working relationship built over the years among themselves”.

The chairman said aside from group completions, the event also featured individual completions. Adding that 70 veterans, male and female, from 65 and above from the military and other security agencies are expected to be featured in the veterans’ category.
Marquis said:“We place a premium on the physical fitness of the Marathoners, the medical certificate is sacrosanct for this competition.

“So all marathoners are duly informed that all intended marathoners must present the certificate of medical fitness latest by tomorrow,” he added.
He said road mapping for the tournament would be completed by Thursday, December 7, and urged the cooperation of people around the areas.

He said: “The mapping may cause some hitches here and there. But however, we hope that we’ll use as we see for what it is that we need to monitor in preparation for the competition.
“So we are using this opportunity to invite sport loving sport enthusiasts on the you know those that are engaged in sporting activity that are living in Abuja and be part of this this year to defend staff, armed forces and agencies marathon for 2023.
“All plans are already in place to ensure that this competition is hitch free. We have medical facilities for any unforeseen medical eventualities and we are fully prepared to ensure that this marathon is successfully conducted. So, we hope that all our marathoners are fully prepared as we are fully prepared” he added.

The chairman said star prizes for competition are brand new cars for the top winners for both male and female categories.
Marquis said: “ We also have cash prizes for marathoners that took second and third places. We also have certificates of participation and medals to be given to group competitors and also individual competitors.
“Some of our sponsors are also promising to surprise all participants. So the event is loaded with a lot of promising prizes.”

The chairman encouraged prospective participants to participate fairly but fiercely, adding that cheating would not be condoned.
He also warned participants against using banned substances before and during the championship.
