Ahead of the 2023 general elections,Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has admonished politicians to always seek the face of God in pursuing their aspirations.

Governor Diri gave the advice on Sunday at the 60th birthday thanksgiving of popular cleric, Archbishop Winning Willy Bunting, at the Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall in Yenagoa.

In a press statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, quoted the governor as saying that as the political tempo heightens, it was expedient on politicians to listen to the voice of God.

He said what happened in the state before and after the 2019 governorship election ought to be a lesson to political office seekers in the state to learn from.

Senator Diri asserted that left for those that had all the powers and military might at their disposal, he would not have emerged as governor.

The state helmsman advised political office holders seeking higher positions not to trust in physical backers but rather wait on God’s direction.

His words: “This is another political season again. But often we do not learn. We forget so fast that it is not by anybody’s power or strength to occupy any office. If it were for those who had the powers, we would not be here.

“I have always said Bayelsa politicians should use me as example. If God never said yes, you will never be.

“You can have all the strategies but God will bring one minor thing to make you look like a fool. So, I admonish all of us in politics to go and seek the face of God.

“First of all, go humbly to God and find out if you should even purchase the nomination form. What happened to us in this state should be a lesson to all of us; that no power is greater than the power of God.”

Governor Diri, while congratulating Archbishop Bunting, narrated how the celebrant, a United States-based preacher and founder of the Apostolic Army Church, prophesied his victory as governor of the state.

Diri said the cleric relocated from his base in the US to Bayelsa and declared to him that the governorship election would be tough but that he would eventually be victorious.

The governor also disclosed that while they were in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, he followed Bunting from a distance and was not close to him. He added that he however believed the prophecy being a politician that always listened to the voice of God before taking any political step.

He also narrated how the servant of God always administered the Holy Communion and offered prayers for him towards fulfillment of the prophecy on a daily basis.

Diri further explained how the cleric was unwavering that the prophecy would come to pass regardless of the outcome of the election until the Supreme Court affirmed it on February 13, 2020 just a day to his swearing-in as governor.

He said: “In the build-up to the 2019 governorship election, this man of God was not here with us. But he came all the way from the United States and lodged at the Royal Castle Hotel where I was also staying at the time for security reasons. He said the election would be very tough. Many things would be done against you but you will win at the end of the day.

“As I said, I was not close to him in Port Harcourt and unable to determine the veracity of what he told me. But coming from a man of God, I believed it.

“Later, when I returned to Abuja and was pursuing all the legal battles, he still came there and said if all he had said were not true, let God take his life.

“So, in the midst of fake prophets and pastors, we still have true and real men of God.”

In his remarks, Archbishop Bunting called on political office holders to take a cue from Governor Diri, who he said has singled out himself in governance for making God his first priority.

He advised those working with the governor to follow his footsteps to succeed politically.
