Political Earthquake in Kano as NNPP Members Defect En Masse to APC…

Kano State’s political atmosphere crackled with excitement over the weekend as a massive wave of defections hit the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), sending shockwaves across the state’s political landscape.
In a scene reminiscent of election rallies, thousands of members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement — the grassroots force behind the NNPP — trooped out to declare their allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The dramatic event took place under the watchful eyes of dignitaries and party stalwarts, with the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, personally receiving the new members into the ruling party.
The air in Kano was thick with chants, songs, and the rhythmic beating of drums as defectors, clad in red caps once symbolizing Kwankwasiyya loyalty, replaced them with the green-and-white colours of the APC.
Senator Barau Jibrin, visibly elated, described the occasion as “a homecoming of progressives who have realized that development, unity, and governance thrive better under the APC umbrella.”

“This is not just a defection,” he declared. “It is a return to the politics of purpose, inclusion, and service to the people of Kano State.”
According to him, the APC remains the most reliable political platform for genuine patriots who desire a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
The defectors, drawn from across the 44 local government areas of Kano, included ward leaders, youth coordinators, and women mobilizers who vowed to strengthen the APC’s grassroots structures ahead of future elections.

One of the group’s spokespersons explained that their decision stemmed from dissatisfaction with the leadership style within the NNPP, which they claimed had strayed from the ideals that initially attracted them.
“We joined the NNPP for change, but what we saw was chaos,” he said.

“The APC offers us the structure, unity, and sense of belonging we were looking for.”

The crowd roared in approval as symbolic brooms — the emblem of the APC — were distributed among the defectors, marking their official entry into the party.

For many observers, the defection signifies a shifting tide in Kano’s political dynamics, where loyalty to personalities is gradually giving way to alignment with parties perceived to wield national influence.
Analysts believe the move strengthens the position of Senator Jibrin as one of Kano’s most influential political figures and a bridge-builder between northern interests and national governance.

Within the NNPP camp, however, reactions were mixed. Some party loyalists dismissed the event as political theatre, insisting that the Kwankwasiyya Movement remains intact and unshaken by what they termed “temporary distractions.”

Yet, as the sun set on a jubilant Kano, the city’s streets told a different story — one of shifting loyalties, renewed alliances, and a political current that seems to be blowing firmly in the direction of the All Progressives Congress.
