President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the creation of a special Armed Forces Welfare Fund, pledging to donate all his salaries since assuming office as seed funding for the initiative.

The announcement was made on Saturday to mark his 74th birthday, in a move aimed at supporting Nigeria’s military personnel and their families.

In a personal statement, the President and Commander-in-Chief paid tribute to members of the Armed Forces, describing them as “valiant men and women” who continue to make immense sacrifices in service to the nation.
“On this my 74th birthday, I celebrate the valiant men and women of our Armed Forces,” Tinubu stated.

According to the directive, the President has instructed the Accountant-General of the Federation to immediately establish a dedicated account for the welfare fund.
The initiative is designed to provide targeted support for: Soldiers wounded in the line of duty.

Families of fallen heroes, including widows, widowers, and children
The fund will also cater specifically to personnel who have suffered life-altering injuries, including loss of limbs, as well as dependents of those who died in active service.

Personal Contribution as Seed Funding
President Tinubu disclosed that all salaries he has earned since taking office will be paid into the fund as initial capital. The contribution, he noted, is separate from existing military welfare and insurance schemes already in place.

The President called on key stakeholders across the country to support the initiative, urging governors, lawmakers, private sector players, and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute.

“I call on our Governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector, my friends and all well-wishers to support this initiative. Details of the account will be made available in due course.”
“This Is Duty, Not Charity”

Emphasising the moral responsibility behind the move, Tinubu stressed that supporting the Armed Forces should not be seen as an act of charity, but as a national obligation.

“We must never forget those who stand in harm’s way for our peace, nor the sacrifices borne by their families. This is not charity. It is duty. And we will fulfil it.”

Further details regarding the operation of the fund and contribution guidelines are expected to be released by relevant government authorities in the coming days.
